The First Map of the Ocean Floor

For most of human history the bottom of the ocean was imagined as a broad, featureless plain. There was no reason to think otherwise. Sailors could measure depth near a coast with a weighted rope, but the deep ocean offered no way to look and no way to reach.

That changed with sonar. By sending sound pulses toward the seafloor and timing the echo, ships crossing the Atlantic could record depth continuously along their path. Each crossing produced a long strip of numbers: a single line drawn across an enormous unknown.

In the 1950s Marie Tharp worked at a laboratory that collected these readings. She was not permitted aboard the research vessels, so her contribution was made entirely on paper. She converted the sonar strips into profiles, then arranged the profiles side by side and drew what lay between them.

A pattern emerged that she had not expected. Down the middle of the Atlantic ran a mountain range, and along the crest of that range ran a deep valley. A rift. When she reported it, her colleague Bruce Heezen initially dismissed the finding as 'girl talk,' because a rift implied that the seafloor was pulling apart, and that idea was closely tied to continental drift, then widely rejected.

Tharp checked the profiles again. The valley appeared in crossing after crossing. Separately, a map of earthquake epicenters in the Atlantic was found to trace almost exactly the same line. Two independent kinds of evidence pointed at the same feature, and the objection collapsed.

The maps Tharp produced with Heezen, published through the 1950s and 1960s, became one of the most persuasive arguments for plate tectonics, the theory that now organizes almost everything we understand about the Earth's surface. The work is a reminder that discovery is not only about reaching a place. Sometimes it is about reading carefully what has already been written down.
